"On March 20th, 2026, I attended “The Complicated REFLECTIONS of Him: A Poetic Journey”, at Love Church in Belleville Illinois, written and performed by Jeremy Watson. Jeremy, in an ongoing dialogue with God, tells the story of the journey of abuse by predators that too many young black men have gone through as boys, much of which was Jeremy’s personal story.
The role of faith in this journey was key as it brings to the surface the real struggles between trusting God and blaming God, both of which are part of the faith journey. He presents the ultimate question that so many of us deal with, that is, “where were you, God” and, “why did God let these things happen“. As a survivor and believer, Jeremy resolves these questions for himself.
The program was raw, powerful, revealing and extremely personal. Jeremy effectively draws you into the story and you feel his pain in the emotions he exhibits in his performance, as if he’s reliving his journey right on stage.
Jeremy has coined the phrase “I am Him”, as displayed on the shirts worn by different performers, which can be interpreted in many different ways, such as: I am the victim; I am the abuser; I am the survivor; and, I am the believer. Whichever may apply, it sends a strong message. "
